Abstract

Excessive body dissatisfaction in children and adolescents can develop into a disorder called body dysmorphic disorder and the desire to have an ideal body shape is closely related to the term body image. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of self-image with self-esteem in students with body dysmorphic disorders at the extraordinary Kartini city in Batam in 2015. This type of research uses observational analytic design methods with the cross-sectional approach. Data is collected by direct interview using a questionnaire. The population is 90 students. The sample taken in this study was random sampling. From the results of the study showed that of 47 respondents, it is known that experienced negative self-image 19 (40.4%) of respondents, and experienced a positive self-image of 28 (59.6%). For self-esteem of 47 respondents who experienced low self-esteem 21 (44.7%) respondents, and those who had high self-esteem 26 (55.3%) respondents. From the statistical test the value of p-value is smaller than the specified error level (0.072> 0.05). These results indicate that there is no significant relationship between self-image and self-esteem. The conclusion in this study the majority of students with negative self-image and low self-esteem. It is hoped that negative self-image and low self-esteem are not regrettable.
