GIVING A FEEDING BOTTLE OF FORMULA MILK BEFORE SLEEPING WITH THE INCIDENT OF DENTAL CARIES IN PRESCHOOL CHILDREN IN TK DARUSSALAM KECAMATAN BATU AJI BATAM CITY

Abstract

Based on the results of research conducted by researchers on February 15, 2017, in Puskesmas Batu Aji Batam City obtained data that the total number of students TK A Darussalam District Batu Aji, age children 3-5 years as many as 71 people and 40 of them suffered dental caries. The result of the interview to the parents of TK Darussalam students found that 5 out of 7 parents stated that their children still drink formula milk before bed. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between formula feeding at bedtime and the incidence of dental caries in pre-school children. The design of this study used an analytical survey with cross sectional approach, pre school children population in TK Darussalam , Batu Aji Sub-district, Batam City, the sample of this research was done by total sampling technique that is 71 respondents. This research was conducted in TK Darussalam Batu Aji Sub-district, Batam City, data was collected using checklist and interview method as additional data, on 10-12 July 2017. Based on data analysis using chi square statistic test showed that there was a significant correlation between giving formula milk before bed with dental caries incidence in pre school children with p-value 0.000. The value of Odds Ratio 9.90. So the feeding of formula bottle before bedtime in pre school children 10 times risk of dental caries compared with children who are not given formula feeding bottle before bed.Based on this study, schools are encouraged to provide counseling or leaflets on formula feeding before bedtime with dental caries events.
