Abstract

Batam City's strategic position between the Strait of Malacca and the Strait of Singapore makes it a center of economic and trade activities that continues to grow rapidly. This rapid economic growth has led to an increase in infrastructure needs, including roads and transportation systems. One of the problems faced by Batam City is the narrowing of roads which causes an increase in traffic density. This study aims to determine the relationship of traffic flow characteristics and identify the maximum flow value and maximum density on normal and narrowed road sections. The research data were collected through field survey for one week. Data analysis was conducted based on the guidelines of the 1997 Indonesian Road Capacity Manual (MKJI). To analyze the relationship between volume, speed, and density, two models were used: the Greenshields model and the Greenberg model. Based on the results of data analysis, the coefficient of determination on normal road segments for the Greenshields model is r² = 1.000 and for the Greenberg model is r² = 0.941. While on the narrowed road segment, the coefficient of determination for the Greenshields model is r² = 1.000 and for the Greenberg model is r² = 0.929. Thus, the calculation results show that the Greenshields model provides better results because it has a higher coefficient of determination than the Greenberg model.
