Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Anatomical and physiological changes in the urinary tract during pregnancy increase pregnant women's susceptibility to urinary tract infections (UTIs). These infections can trigger inflammation that weakens the amniotic membranes, thereby increasing the risk of premature rupture of membranes (PROM). As a pregnancy complication, PROM is associated with increased maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, making early detection and appropriate management essential. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design involving 252 pregnant women selected through total sampling. Data on urinary tract infections (UTIs) and preterm rupture of membranes (PROM) were obtained from medical records and analyzed using the chi-square test with a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: The results of the study showed that of 252 pregnant women, 124 (49.2%) had urinary tract infections and 92 (36.5%) experienced premature rupture of membranes. The chi-square test revealed a significant association between urinary tract infections and the occurrence of premature rupture of membranes (p < 0.001).       Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between urinary tract infections and the incidence of premature rupture of membranes in pregnant women at Budi Kemuliaan Hospital, Batam, during the period of May–September 2025. Early detection, diagnosis, and management of urinary tract infections during pregnancy are necessary to reduce the risk of premature rupture of membranes.
