Abstract

Background: Sugar Sweetened Beverages (SSBs) are drinks with high added sugar content and low nutritional value, known to be one of the contributing factors to overweight in adolescents. Excessive consumption of SSBs can lead to an increase in daily calorie intake, which contributes to the risk of weight gain and obesity. This study was aimed to the effect of Sugar Sweetened Beverages consumption on the risk of weight gain in 10th grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Batam. Methods: This study was an analytic observational design with a longitudinal approach. A total of 87 respondents were selected using cluster random sampling. Data collection was conducted using the Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) and weight measurements were taken using a digital scale at the beginning and end of a one-month period. The data were analyzed using Independent Sample T-Test. Results: The results showed a significant difference in weight gain between respondents with excessive SSB consumption (1.550 kg) and those with adequate consumption (0.046 kg), with a statistical test result of p-value = 0.000. Conclusion: There was a significant effect of Sugar-Sweetened Beverage consumption on weight gain among adolescents.
