Abstrak

Background: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, with smoking as the primary risk factor. This study aims to analyze the relationship between exposure to cigarette smoke, duration of exposure, and obesity status concerning the risk of COPD at Hj. Bunda Halimah Hospital, Batam. Methods: This research uses an analytical observational study design with a cross-sectional approach, utilizing secondary data from medical records. The sample was purposively selected from 91 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The independent variables analyzed include exposure to cigarette smoke, duration of exposure, and obesity status, while the dependent variable is the risk of COPD. This research is expected to increase awareness and motivation to quit smoking or reduce the duration of exposure. Results: Analysis results using the Chi-square test indicate a significant relationship between exposure to cigarette smoke (p<0.001) and duration of exposure with the risk of COPD (p<0.001). However, no significant relationship was found between obesity status and the risk of COPD (p=0.552). The majority of respondents are smokers exposed to passive cigarette smoke (59.3%) and have long-term exposure (53.8%). Conclusion: This study concludes that exposure to cigarette smoke and the duration of exposure have a significant relationship with an increased risk of COPD, making it important to control cigarette smoke exposure as a preventive measure to reduce the risk of COPD among active smokers
